It’s just gong to be GREAT!
WE’LL MAKE SALTOS ON SALTO AND JUMP AROUND
To explore my interest in the body within a mass I’ll ask young people from different backgrounds in Amsterdam to videotape their community, dancing on their music, making their moves, creating their mass.
For the showreel for Salto TV I videotaped my own community dancing:
VIRTUAL MASS VS. PHYSICAL MASS
a contemplation
Communities exist on a virtual level almost more then on a physical level nowadays, with Facebook, Youtube and all the other places where people exchange their beliefs, struggles and most interestingly in relation to my subject: display their bodies collectively. Could one construct a mass that somehow has a physical impact, out of all these virtual displays of individual bodies?
I’ll try to create an online community where people can upload a movie of themselves performing a choreography I asked them to do:
THE BACKGROUND OF MY INTEREST IN MASSES
the things I’ve been thinking about for a while now
I have been working with issues that revolve around the mass versus the individual for a while now. My focus has been on mass-gymnastics events in the former GDR, but I’ve been researching different political, social and economical structures in different times and countries. I’m especially interested in how one relates his or her individual body to that of a group. A mass recalls images of propaganda and dictatorial regimes, but also images of doing things together, fighting for the same cause, and being a community. There’s always a tension and a very delicate power balance in a mass.
