Images from Bangalore arrived from different ways and through different sources. The ones received before our departure through media, Internet, travel guides and other sources, included an imaginary that among other aspects, defined Bangalore as a city embracing Western patterns together with the technical development that is leading to a leapfrog effect.
How does technological development affect individual and collective imagination of a certain place? How does it affect us, artists, arriving at an unknown place whose satellite images we already knew? By collecting visual data based on our individual experience of Bangalore as an IT city and later translating it into another form, as sound, it was possible to initiate a process of transcoding where more than transferring code into another, it would extend the limits of the experience of space itself.
The content, gathered on a temporary databank, shared by the Space The Final Frontier participants, was partially transcoded into a sound file with the program Sound of an Image. The digital soundtrack was brought to the musicians of the New Bharath Brass Band, a family band specialised in playing folk songs on weddings. They interpreted and translated the soundtrack and our intentions in the way they found suitable. In the end, five musicians, playing horns, drum and trumpet, performed their translation of the soundtrack during the Space the Final Frontier exhibition.
The process of interpreting this sound piece extended so to say the limits of the transcoding and its technological aspect, generating another space for translation and negotiation, and which result would be made accessible to everyone.
